  1. Short:    72hz NTSC monitor driver WORKS!

  7. This is a replacement for the standard 60hz NTSC monitor driver for kickstarts
  8. 3.x+.  (it won't work on 2.x, but if I get requests for a 2.x one, I'll hack
  9. one up!)
  10. I modified the stock NTSC driver such that the modeid, totrows and totclks are
  11. set up for 72hz.  I did this the old-fashioned C-64 style way...with a 
  12. sector/file editor.  (I dug out DekSid..hehe..)
  13. I tried doing this thru the tooltypes, and time and time again, the driver
  14. faithfully ignored them, so the only remaining option was to edit the driver
  15. itself.

  17. Requirements:
  18. An amiga with Kick3.x.
  19. A monitor that will either handle a 72hz refresh rate, or a monitor with
  20. a vertical hold.  An Amiga 1080, or Commodore 2002 will work--I tested it
  21. on both.  (Well, the monitors are virtually identical anywayz)
  22. I don't know if this requires ECS or above, if it works on OCS, email me.
  23. I don't know what It'll do to a TV.

  32. Like the ITAL36 driver's docs say:  You have been warned.

  34. Compatibility:
  35. Tested with a variety of applications and games.
  36. Most games open their own screens anywayz, thus cancelling out NT70.
  37. Megaball3, Poing3, Deluxe Galaga, Klondike, and several others all ran good, 
  38. and appeared to be using the NT70 video mode.
  39. (in NTSC's place)
  40. Worked with several mandel-programs, SysInfo, AIBB (acted like it cancelled it out 
  41. though), Imploder, All Workbench programs, Ordering, etc... etc...

  43. Caveats:
  44. NO VERTICAL OVERSCAN, YOU ARE NOW LIMITED TO 200 or 400 pixel high screens!
  45. (The cost of a higher refresh rate on ECS)
  46. The computer STILL thinks that this driver is the NTSC driver,  so don't load
  47. the ntsc driver in at the same time or you'll either get stuck in NTSC or
  48. NT70.
  49. A64 won't run with this installed.

  51. WEIRD STUFF:
  52. When you edit your overscan prefs, the screen will be wrapped around one inch over
  53. the left, and continue over on the right.  Just ignore this!
  54. When I ran Sysinfo on my A600 from hell, I got a MOST INTERESTING speed difference
  55. (or so sez Sysinfo...)
  56. Normally I'm running at 1.27 the speed of a stock A600.
  57. (I have a fastram card, making my machine run at an A2000's speed)
  58. (gee whiz, boy, I REALLY noticed that whole 27%...)
  59. Well, now, I'm running at _1.57_ above A600 speed, and Sysinfo sez my
  60. CPU clockrate is 8.08 Mhz, instead of 7.16.
  61. (anybody with explanations, don't hesitate to email me)
  62. I can't tell if the speedup is real or not, because my machine's slow to start
  63. with, and an extra 30% speedup is hard to tell on an 8 color workbench in
  64. interlace.
